Study of Image Quality Evaluation of Novel Displays

The image quality of novel display is evaluated in this study. There are three experiments: Experiment 1 (Exp-1) analyzed the color characteristics, physical characteristics and perceptual image quality for the OLED wall-paper display (termed OWP) and a curved quantum-dot LCD (termed QD-LCD) which are popular on the market. Experiments 2 (Exp-2) and Experiments 3 (Exp-3) are to study ideal color gamut and preferred color characteristics of the displays respectively. Exp-1 is called “Evaluation of OWP and QD-LCD”. The measurement results of color characteristics showed that the color gamuts of the two displays are similar. In the full screen mode, QD-LCD’s white luminance is 3 times higher than that of the OWP. However, using International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) recommended APL-fixed test patterns, both OWP and QD-LCD showed similar Tone Reproduction Curve (TRCs) and luminance levels. OWP's high contrast and extremely thin wall-mounted screens make OWP's overall evaluation score higher than QD-LCD, except for ‘steady’ item. The possible reason is that the desktop setup looks more stable than the wall-mounted type in the visual assessment. Exp-2 named “Display gamut optimization”. The optimized color gamut was established by using DCI-P3 color gamut as reference prototype. The Pointer’s gamut and SOCS database of the object color were used to evaluate the optimized color gamut’s color reproduction capability. The evaluation results show that the optimized color gamut has better performance than the DCI-P3, but slightly worse than the Rec.2020. Although optimized color gamut can cover Pointer’s gamut completely, but still can’t cover SOCS completely. Besides, Exp-3 named “Preference of display color and tone curve”. Eighteen patterns were designed for visual evaluation with three color temperatures, three TRCs and two brightness levels. The results showed that the image quality of natural images has a significant effect on color temperature, TRC and lumiance. The significant causes of text and graphics are lumiance and color temperature.The three experimental results of this thesis can be used as a reference to set the color parameters of the display, and to optimize its visual performance according to requirements.
