The Process of Implementing International Pen Pal Exchange Activity:A Portfolio of an Elementary English Teacher

The purpose of this study is to understand the process of promoting international pen pal exchange activities and discuss the reflection and growth while implementing international pen pal teaching and instructions. Therefore, a case study was adopted by using a narrative approach method to describe the implementation of international pen pal exchange activities integrated with the English curriculum at public elementary schools in Taipei city. At the first stage, the second graders at an elementary school at Wanhua District were chosen to interact with students from Poland. Second, the third and fourth graders at an elementary school in Zhongshan District were chosen to interact with students from Singapore, Japan, and the US. Third, the fifth graders at the same elementary school at Zhongshan District interacted with students from Japan, Poland and India. The conclusions of this research are as follows. 1. While promoting international pen pal exchange activities, there were some fundamental issues that teachers needed to pay attention to, including the communication before the program implementation, and while the letter writing instruction, students might have several problems in terms of letter reading, sharing and writing. 2. The schools in this study generally supported the international pen pal exchange activities and the English teachers established an international education team to design the articulation curriculum as well. The school administrations also planned to include an international education in afterschool club so as to implement the international pen pal exchange activity to different grades. 3. The international pen pal exchange activities was a teamwork project in which English teachers worked collaboratively in planning lessons. By doing this, teachers collaborative learning and cooperation were promoted and the researcher’s perspective and teaching competence were developed as well. Lastly, the suggestions from the study were provided as references for school administrations, educators and future studies.
