  • Note: Date range based on style of drawing. ; Artist: Several of the images in this watercolor are taken from engravings by Stothard but they are more crudely drawn than the engravings and in general this drawing lacks the control and technique one would expect from the hand of Stothard. Watercolor is probably after Stothard rather than by him. ; Drawing is glued solidly to a backing, mounted with a similar watercolor illustrating characters from the tragedies. In pencil on Folger copy, lower right corner of mount: "Famous characters from Shakespeare by T. Stothard R.A." Unsigned. ; History: Two sets of figures in the drawing can be related directly to Stothard engravings. The figures in the trees in the background at left are lifted from an illustration to Love's labour's lost, act IV, sc. 3 (see ART File S528l1 no. 29), and the figures of Rosalind and Celia at right are taken from an engraving of As you like it, act II, sc. 4 (see ART File S528a4 no. 28). Both were used to illustrate an 1826 edition of Shakespeare's works published by Pickering (PR 2752 1826a1 copy 1 Sh. Col.). ; Provenance: Purchased as part of a collection of 122 watercolors of Shakespearean scenes, from a private owner by "Sabin" ca. 1898, and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells, April 28, 1920. Most of the items in the collection were attributed to John Masey Wright. (Formerly ART Inv. 289 no. 116 - case 889) ; Subject: Pictured from left to right are Beatrice listening in the arbour from Much ado; Julia, Malvolio, Sir Toby Belch and Aguecheek from Twelfth night; Falstaff; Corin or Touchstone, Celia, Rosalind, and Orlando from As you like it; Prospero and Miranda, and above them spirits and Caliban from The tempest. Other figures are pictured in the background as well as the above mentioned scene from Love' labour's lost in the trees above left. ; This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
