The purpose of this study is primarily to counteract legionella bacteria in the tap water which can form and grow if the tap water temperature is within the risk range of 20–50 °C. Inhalation of legionella bacteria can lead to Pontiac fever or the fatal Legionnaires’ disease. Several authorities, such as the Housing Authority (Boverket) and the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket), also set requirements for cold water. On the one hand, the cold water must not exceed a temperature of 24 ℃ when standing still within 8 hours, and on the other hand, the cold water must meet certain sanitary requirements for food. Motivated by the Sustainable Development Goal “Clean water and sanitation”and economical and sustainable use of resources. This study began with a literature study where scientific reports, authority sources and previous course literature were reviewed to obtain tools and information for the study. The implementation involved designing a heat pump for measuring energy consumption. The system consisted of a hot water circulation system (VVC) and a cold water circulation system (KVC), where the KVC side is cooled at the same time as the VVC side is heated with a heat pump. Then the system is compared against a classic district heating with a VVC system heated with a heat exchanger, which is done by performing a life cycle cost comparison using the life cycle model (LLC) and the present value method. A model was also designed on which all calculations of the energy use, cost and environmental impact were performed. The result that has been obtained from the study indicates that the VVC and KVC heat pump system relates to the temperature ranges that were obtained from the literature study. Compared to district heating, the heat pump is more expensive and the net present value of negative SEK 94 500 indicates that the investment is not profitable. In contrast, the heat pump has a smaller climate impact, with a saving of 750 kg CO2 equivalent/year.
