  • Application Filed: April 27, 2016
  • Claim: 1. A switch, comprising: a control unit; a memory coupled to the control unit; and a port coupled to the control unit and configured to couple the switch to one or more networked devices over a network, the port having a state; wherein the control unit is configured to: receive a first packet on the port; determine whether the first packet is a data center bridging (DCB) packet; set the state of the port to a DCB downstream state based on the determination that the first packet is a DCB packet; receive a second packet on the port from a peer device; determine whether the second packet is a peer configuration packet; determine a type of the peer device based on the peer configuration packet; and set the state of the port to a DCB upstream state or maintain the state of the port in the DCB downstream state based on the determination of the type of the peer device.
  • Claim: 2. The switch of claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to set the state of the port to the DCB upstream state when the type of the peer device is an upstream device.
  • Claim: 3. The switch of claim 2, wherein the upstream device is selected form a group consisting of a switch, a router, and a repeater.
  • Claim: 4. The switch of claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to: receive, on the port, a DCB configuration from the peer device; and transmit the DCB configuration to other devices in the network.
  • Claim: 5. The switch of claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to maintain the state of the port in the DCB downstream state when the type of the peer device is an end station.
  • Claim: 6. The switch of claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to: determine a DCB configuration for the network port; and transmit, on the port, the DCB configuration to the peer device.
  • Claim: 7. The switch of claim 6, wherein the control unit is further configured to determine the DCB configuration for the network port by receiving the DCB configuration from another port on the switch.
  • Claim: 8. The switch of claim 1, wherein the control unit is further configured to set the state of the port to a DCB disabled state before receiving the DCB packet.
  • Claim: 9. A method, comprising: receiving, on a port coupled to a control unit on a switch, a first packet from a peer device over a network; determining, by the control unit, whether the first packet is a DCB packet; setting a state of the port to a DCB downstream state based on the determination that the first packet is a DCB packet; receiving a second packet on the port from the peer device; determining, by the control unit, whether the second packet is a peer configuration packet; determining, by the control unit, a type of the peer device based on the peer configuration packet; and setting the state of the port to a DCB upstream state in response to a determination that the type of the peer device is an upstream device and maintaining the state of the port in the DCB downstream state in response to a determination that the type of the peer device is an end station.
  • Claim: 10. The method of claim 9, wherein the upstream device is selected form a group consisting of a switch, a router, and a repeater.
  • Claim: 11. The method of claim 9, further comprising: receiving, on the port, a DCB configuration from the peer device; and sharing the DCB configuration with other ports on the switch.
  • Claim: 12. The method of claim 9, further comprising: determining a DCB configuration for the network port; and transmitting, on the port, the DCB configuration to the peer device.
  • Claim: 13. The method of claim 12, wherein determining the DCB configuration for the network port is performed by receiving the DCB configuration from another port on the switch.
  • Claim: 14. The method of claim 9, wherein the switch and the peer device are virtual link trunking pairs or stacked switches.
  • Claim: 15. An information handling system, comprising: a control unit; a memory coupled to the control unit; and a port coupled to the control unit and configured to couple the information handling system to one or more networked devices over a network, the port having a state; wherein the control unit is configured to: receive a DCB packet on the port; set the state of the port to a DCB downstream state; receive a peer configuration packet on the port from a peer device; determine a type of the peer device based on the peer configuration packet; set the state of the port to a DCB upstream state or maintain the state of the port in the DCB downstream state based on the determination of the type of the peer device; determine a DCB configuration; and transmit the DCB configuration to other devices in the network.
  • Claim: 16. The information handling system of claim 15, wherein determining the DCB configuration comprises receiving it from the peer device.
  • Claim: 17. The information handling system of claim 15, wherein the control unit is further configured to set the state of the port to the DCB upstream state when the type of the peer device is an upstream device.
  • Claim: 18. The information handling system of claim 15, wherein the control unit is further configured to maintain the state of the port in the DCB downstream state when the type of the peer device is an end station.
  • Claim: 19. The information handling system of claim 15, wherein the control unit is further configured to set the state of the port to a DCB disabled state before receiving the DCB packet.
  • Claim: 20. The information handling system of claim 15, wherein the information handling system and the peer device are virtual link trunking pairs or stacked switches.
  • Current International Class: 04; 04; 04
