  • Appl. No: 17/022170
  • Application Filed: September 16, 2020
  • Claim: 1. An altered drilling fluid, comprising: a water-based drilling fluid or an oil-based drilling fluid; and a lost circulation material (LCM), wherein the LCM comprises a plurality of date tree waste fibers produced from at least one of: date tree trunks, date tree rachis, date tree leaves, date tree leaflets, and date tree roots, wherein each of the plurality of date tree waste fibers has a length in the range of 5 millimeters (mm) to 15 mm and the plurality of date tree waste fibers have a moisture content of less than 3% by weight.
  • Claim: 2. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein the water-based drilling fluid comprises water, a clay, a water hardness remover, and a base.
  • Claim: 3. The altered drilling fluid of claim 2, wherein the water comprises freshwater or seawater.
  • Claim: 4. The altered drilling fluid of claim 2, wherein the water hardness remover comprises soda ash.
  • Claim: 5. The altered drilling fluid of claim 2, wherein the base comprises sodium hydroxide.
  • Claim: 6. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein the water-based drilling fluid has a pH of at least 10.
  • Claim: 7. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein the oil-based drilling fluid comprises a base oil, a primary emulsifier, a secondary emulsifier, a viscosifier and filtrate control additive.
  • Claim: 8. The oil-based drilling fluid of claim 7, wherein the base oil comprises diesel or crude oil.
  • Claim: 9. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein the plurality of date tree waste fibers have a concentration of at least 30 pounds-per-barrel (ppb) in the altered drilling fluid.
  • Claim: 10. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein the plurality of date tree waste fibers comprise a plurality of untreated date tree waste fibers.
  • Claim: 11. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of date tree waste fibers has a diameter in the range of 0.5 millimeters (mm) to 0.8 mm.
  • Claim: 12. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein each of plurality of date tree waste fibers has an aspect ratio in the range of 6 to 30.
  • Claim: 13. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein the LCM consists of the plurality of date tree waste fibers.
  • Claim: 14. The altered drilling fluid of claim 1, wherein, the plurality of date tree waste fibers are produced by: cleaning date tree waste using pressurized air; drying the date tree waste for a time period of at least 24 hours at a temperature in the range of 40° C. to 50° C. to reduce the moisture content of the date tree waste to less than 3% by weight; grinding the date tree waste; and sorting the ground date tree waste into the plurality of date tree waste fibers.
  • Claim: 15. A method of manufacturing a lost circulation material (LCM), comprising: obtaining date tree waste, the date tree waste comprising at least one of: date tree trunks, date tree rachis, date tree leaves, date tree leaflets, and date tree roots; and cleaning the date tree waste using pressurized air; drying the date tree waste for a time period of at least 24 hours at a temperature in the range of 40° C. to 50° C. to reduce the moisture content of the date tree waste to less than 3% by weight; grinding the date tree waste; sorting the ground date tree waste into a plurality of date tree waste fibers each having a length in the range of 5 millimeters (mm) to 15 mm; and mixing the plurality of date tree waste fibers to form a homogenous mix, the LCM comprising the homogenous mix.
  • Claim: 16. The method of claim 15, comprising chopping the date tree waste before grinding the date tree waste.
  • Claim: 17. The method of claim 15, comprising crushing the date tree waste to produce the plurality of date tree waste fibers, wherein the crushing is performed during the grinding.
  • Claim: 18. The method of claim 15, comprising packing the LCM comprising the homogenous mix into a waterproof bag.
  • Current International Class: 09; 09
