  • Assignees: Apex Orthopedics, LLC (Aurora, CO, US)
  • Claim: 1. Mid-foot osteotomy device, comprising a biocompatible implant having a wedge shape configured to be placed between adjacent bones post-osteotomy, the wedge-shaped biocompatible implant has a pre-implant angle and a post-implant angle, the post-implant angle is expandable and configured to provide gradual correction over time post-implant, and inflation chamber within the wedge-shaped biocompatible implant and a fluid conduit communicating with the inflation chamber, wherein the inflation chamber is configured to expand the wedge-shaped biocompatible implant from the pre-implant angle to the post-implant angle under the influence of a fluid input from the fluid conduit to the inflation chamber.
  • Claim: 2. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1, wherein the biocompatible implant further comprises a central annular opening and the inflation chamber surrounds the central annular opening.
  • Claim: 3. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 2, wherein the central annular opening is configured to allow for fixation between two opposing bone tissue surfaces through the central annular opening
  • Claim: 4. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1, wherein the biocompatible implant is fabricated of shape memory or superelastic nickel-titanium based alloy.
  • Claim: 5. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1, wherein the biocompatible implant is fabricated of a biocompatible material selected from the group consisting of metal, ceramic, composites, polymer, or a synthetic bone growth matrix, or combinations thereof.
  • Claim: 6. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 5, wherein the metal is selected from the group of shape memory alloys, stainless steel, cobalt-based alloys, and titanium.
  • Claim: 7. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 6, wherein the metal is a porous metal.
  • Claim: 8. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 5, further comprising a surface treatment that imparts osteophilic bone growth sites to the biocompatible material.
  • Claim: 9. The mid-foot osteotomy device according to claim 5, wherein the ceramic is selected from the group consisting of alumina, zirconia, alumina composites, or oxidized zirconium composites.
  • Claim: 10. The mid-foot osteotomy device according to claim 5, wherein the synthetic bone growth matrix is selected from the group of hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, or combinations thereof.
  • Claim: 11. The mid-foot osteotomy device according to claim 5, wherein the polymer further comprises a resorbable polymer selected from the group of polylactides, polyglycolides, polycaprolactone, cellulose, chitosan, collagen, hyaluronan, fibrin, or combinations thereof.
  • Claim: 12. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 1, wherein the wedge-shaped biocompatible implant further comprises an inflatable balloon.
  • Claim: 13. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 12, wherein the inflatable balloon is microporous.
  • Claim: 14. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 12, wherein the inflatable balloon is made of a bioresorbable material.
  • Claim: 15. An osteotomy implant, comprising a wedge-shaped member having a central annular opening, the wedge-shaped member having a taper configured to be placed between adjacent bones post-osteotomy; and an inflation chamber within the wedge-shaped implant, wherein the wedge-shaped implant has a taper that is capable of being expanded from a first angle to a second angle upon introducing of a fluid into the inflation chamber.
  • Claim: 16. The mid-foot osteotomy device of claim 15, wherein the central annular opening is configured to allow for fixation between two opposing bone tissue surfaces through the central annular opening.
  • Current International Class: 61; 61
