The restoration of the polychrome decoration in the choir of Chartres Cathedral, by Patrice Calvel During the years 2008-2009, work was undertaken in the first stage of restoration of the painted revetment on the interior of Chartres Cathedral, where polychrome vestiges had been pointed out in 1989 by JürgenMichler. In the thirteenth century the stone facing had been covered with a ground of light ochre and white fictive joins, whereas the colonnettes and mouldings of the arches were whitewashed. Restorations in two radiating chapels were reconstructed from vestiges. The upper levels of the choir and the vaults, on the other hand, have preserved most of their original decoration, which was restored at the end of theMiddle Ages with a partial polychrome coating quite similar to the original. At the end of the eighteenth century an orange-tinted coating with red fictive joins was applied throughout. The recent campaign, which uncovered heraldic decoration on the keystones of the vaults, has restored the original colour and luminosity to the choir and once again given the windows their rightful place in the architecture.
