This paper suggests that The Gold Bug Variations by Richard Powers reads like an attempt made by literature to reclaim possession of the territory of science. In this respect, the book may be viewed as belonging to the tradition of popular scientific works the aim of which is to bring together high culture and science. The book, drawing its scientific material from genetics, also casts a critical eye on the capacity of high culture to fully grasp the mystery of life, for Power’s narrative intimates that high culture introduces the mediation of knowledge between man and life, and thus prevents man from truly understanding life. On the other hand, popular culture, which is supposed to be more immediate, is presented as a better way to approach and comprehend life. The novel, however, challenges this notion by suggesting that the so-called immediacy of popular culture may be just another high-culture discourse thrust on popular culture.
