The analysis of the use and the semantic field of the terms φαέθων and ἀκάμας / ἀκἀματος in Greek archaic and classical literature prove that we must read in Empedocles FVS 31 B 115, 11 DK not ἠελίου φαέθοντος Hippolytus of Rome wrote (because he was likely influenced by the stoic theory of universal cataclysm), but ἠελίου ἀκάμαντος (so Plutarchus). This nominal group is linked to the Homeric and Hesiodic concept of tireless, quick and destructive fire, its concept fits into the reign of the Strife Empedocles described, and its words fit into the sonority of the fragment 115.
