  • Claim: We claim
  • Claim: 1. An absorbent liquid for improved absorption capacity for CO.sub.2 in a gas due to the presence of an activator for CO.sub.2 absorption from said gas, the absorbent liquid comprising a mixture of one or more tertiary alkanolamines and the activator of improved CO.sub.2 absorption by said tertiary alkanolamines, said activator having the general formula R.sub.1 --NH--(C.sub.p H.sub.2p)--OH in which R.sub.1 is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 monovalent hydrocarbon radical, and p is an integer of 1 to 6, and which said activator of said tertiary alkanolamines is present in an activating amount, said activated amines having improved CO.sub.2 absorption capacity.
  • Claim: 2. The absorbent liquid of claim 1 wherein the activating amount is in a minor proportion relative to the tertiary alkanolamine.
  • Claim: 3. The absorbent liquid of claim 2 wherein the activator is at least one amino compound of formula R.sub.3 --NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.q --OH, in which R.sub.3 is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 alkyl radical, and q is an integer of 1 to 6.
  • Claim: 4. The absorbent liquid of claim 3 wherein the activator is ethylmonoethanolamine.
  • Claim: 5. The absorbent liquid of claim 2 which is an aqueous solution of the tertiary alkanolamine and the activator.
  • Claim: 6. The absorbent liquid of claim 5 wherein the solution also contains a minor amount of at least one water-soluble organic solvent for acidic gases selected from the group consisting of sulpholane, methanol and N-methylpyrrolidone.
  • Claim: 7. The absorbent liquid of claim 5, wherein the concentration of the tertiary alkanolamine in the aqueous solution is from 1 N to 6 N.
  • Claim: 8. The absorbent liquid of claim 7, wherein the concentration of the tertiary alkanolamine component in the aqueous solution is from 2.5 N to 5 N.
  • Claim: 9. The absorbent liquid of claim 5 wherein the quantity of activator is such that the ratio of the number of moles of activator to the total number of moles of activator and of tertiary alkanolamine is between 0.01 and 0.5.
  • Claim: 10. The absorbent liquid of claim 9 wherein the quantity of activator is such that the ratio of the number of moles of activator to the total number of moles of activator and of tertiary alkanolamine is between 0.05 and 0.25.
  • Claim: 11. The absorbent liquid of claim 5 wherein the tertiary alkanolamine is selected from the group consisting of N-methyldiethanolamine, triethanolamine, 2-dimethylaminoethanol, 3-dimethylamino-1-propanol and 1-diethylamino-2-propanol.
  • Claim: 12. The absorbent liquid of claim 11 wherein the tertiary alkanolamine is methyldiethanolamine.
  • Claim: 13. A process for improved CO.sub.2 absorption from a gas by an absorbent liquid which has an improved absorption capacity for CO.sub.2 which process comprises contacting said gas and the absorbent liquid in an absorption zone having an upper and lower part, thereby obtaining a treated gas with a reduced content of CO.sub.2 and the absorbent liquid with increased CO.sub.2 content, and regenerating the absorbent liquid which has an increased CO.sub.2 content, thereby releasing the CO.sub.2 and producing at least one gaseous fraction containing the released CO.sub.2 and at least one portion of the regenerated absorbent liquid and recycling said regenerated absorbent liquid to the absorption zone, the absorbent liquid being a mixture of one or more tertiary alkanolamines and an activator of improved CO.sub.2 absorption by said tertiary alkanolamines, said activator having the general formula R.sub.1 --NH--(C.sub.p H.sub.2p)--OH in which R.sub.1 is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.6 monovalent hydrocarbon radical, and p is an integer of 1 to 6, the activator of the tertiary alkanolamines being present in an activating amount to increase CO.sub.2 absorption by said activated amines.
  • Claim: 14. The process of claim 12 wherein the regeneration step comprises at least one decompression sep of at least a part of the CO.sub.2 -comprising liquid.
  • Claim: 15. The process of claim 13 wherein the regeneration step comprises subjecting all of the CO.sub.2 -comprising liquid to at least one decompression step, thereby releasing essentially all of the CO.sub.2 from said CO.sub.2 -comprising liquid, obtaining an absorbent decompressed liquid and subjecting the decompressed absorbent liquid to a complementary regeneration step which comprises steam-stripping the absorbent liquid by heating.
  • Claim: 16. The process of claim 15 wherein part of the decompressed absorbent liquid is subjected to said complementary regeneration by steam-stripping, the absorbent liquid resulting therefrom being recycled into the upper part of the absorption zone while the part of the decompressed absorbent liquid which is not subjected to the complementary regeneration is recycled into the absorption zone below the absorbent liquid which is regenerated by steam-stripping.
  • Claim: 17. The process of claim 14 wherein the regeneration of the absorbent CO.sub.2 -comprising liquid comprises subjecting a fraction of said liquid to decompression in at least one stage, thereby releasing essentially all of the CO.sub.2 while the remaining fraction of the absorbent CO.sub.2 -comprising liquid is subjected directly to steam-stripping regeneration by heating, recycling the fraction of the absorbent liquid regenerated by steam-stripping into the upper part of the absorption zone while recycling the decompressed fraction of the absorbent liquid into the absorption zone below the absorbent liquid regenerated by heat-stripping.
  • Claim: 18. The process of claim 16 wherein the steam-stripping is by direct-heating.
  • Claim: 19. The process of claim 16 wherein the steam-stripping is by indirect-heating.
  • Claim: 20. The process of claim 13 wherein the concentration of the tertiary alkanolamine ranges from about 1N to 6N.
  • Claim: 21. The process of claim 20 wherein the concentration of the tertiary alkanolamine ranges from about 2.5N to 5N.
  • Claim: 22. The process of claim 13 wherein the activating amount of the activator is such that the ratio of the number of moles of said activator to the total number of moles of said activator and said tertiary alkanolamine is between about 0.01 and 0.5.
  • Claim: 23. The process of claim 22 wherein the activating amount of the activator is such that the ratio of the number of moles of said activator to the total number of moles of said activator and said tertiary alkanolamine is between about 0.05 and 0.25.
