Background: Stigma towards mental illness is a big factor contributing to a lower quality of healthcare that can be provided, especially when those who present that stigma are healthcare professionals. At this present time there aren't many studies regarding this topic in Portugal, so validating a scale that can evaluate stigma is of the upmost importance. The Opening Minds Stigma Scale is a tool that can be very useful in future studies regarding this matter. Because it was directed towards healthcare professionals and has been validated for multiple other countries, it was a good option for European Portuguese validation. Method: The data was collected via the "Snowball effect", reaching a sample of 503 participants, a majority of which identified as female (81.1%). The sample included mainly psychologists (39.4%) and physicians (30.8%). Reliability and Validity analysis were made. Also, Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were performed. CFA was done on multiple models, including the one proposed by the original authors. Results: The internal consistency of the scale was adequate (α=0.60). Our results suggest that a 12-item model was the most adequate (RMSEA= 0.026, SRMR=0.057, CFI=0.979, TLI=0.973, NNFI=0.973, GFI=0.955) compared with our 15-item model and the original model. Conclusion: Our model of 12-items showed good reliability and validity, being adequate to implement in the population of Portuguese Healthcare Professionals.
