CIGS thin film solar cells are a technology with potential for space applications. Their high efficiency and low mass are characteristics that make them attractive for small satellites. This type of satellites, which currently colonize the near-Earth space, require the reduction of the mass of their components, either by miniaturizing them or by using lighter materials. For a satellite to be considered capable of being launched into space, all its subsystems must be tested. In the case of solar cells, which are part of the energy supply and distribution subsystem, they must be subjected to irradiation tests (with protons and electrons) in order to assess their resistance in terms of performance. In this work, CIGS solar cells were irradiated with protons of 1 MeV and fluences of 1012 cm⁻² and 1013 cm⁻², having studied the impact of irradiation on the electrical performance of these cells and on the electronic structure of the CIGS layer. For this purpose, electrical measurements of current density – voltage and optical measurements of photoluminescence (PL) were carried out, respectively. Two strategies were also applied as a way of recovering the cells' performance after irradiation: low temperature annealing and light-soaking. From the photoluminescence measurements performed before irradiation, it was verified that the CIGS layer of the cells is strongly doped, revealing an electronic structure influenced by potential fluctuations. This was only possible to conclude in cells where the interference phenomenon was not superimposed on the luminescence of the cells themselves. With irradiation, the cell efficiency was degraded between 15% to 32%, the open circuit voltage degraded between 10% and 22% and the photoluminescence results showed that there was an increase in the amplitude of the potential fluctuations. The results of both measurements are compatible with damage formation. Degradation, it should be noted, only occurred in cells irradiated with a fluence of 1013 cm⁻². Regarding the recovery of solar cells performance, both strategies allowed a partial recovery.
