This research results from the arrival of the CNN network in Portugal, more specifically at TVI's headquarters in Queluz de Baixo. The shared newsroom between the new channel and TVI's generalist information caught our interest to investigate how two channels organize themselves in sharing a newsroom. Since CNN is a news network present in several parts of the world, with solid routines and a consolidated style of its own, it is a reference in journalism. The main objective of this dissertation is, therefore, to understand if the arrival of an international news brand such as CNN affected TVI's information and how. The first part of the research refers to a theoretical context where the history of the television broadcasting in the world, in general, and particularly in Portugal, is briefly described, giving special focus to the emergence of private television stations and how they have an influence in the Portuguese television panorama. ‘Audience’, ‘programming’ or ‘scheduling’ are some of the concepts that try to explain that influence. Still in the first part, the data collected, during one week in the TVI/CNN newsroom, through the ethnographic study is also presented. The concept of 'convergence' and its variants are also explained, based on Jenkins (2006) and Salaverría et al (2010), and how they apply to the newsroom of Queluz de Baixo. In the second part, the research hypotheses and their verification are presented, creating a set of results for this study. The two parts of this dissertation aim to answer the problem of this research, which is essentially focused on four hypotheses related to content, priority between channels, human resources, and possible changes in the way some sections work. Thus, the testing confirmed two of the four hypotheses that were presented, which means that although CNN is a consolidated journalism brand, it did not change significantly the way TVI operates.
