Les AFC en Europe et à l’international (1980-1995) : The AFC in Europe and internationally (1980-1995). French militant resources at the service of the institutionalization of Catholic family and 'pro-life' movements

À partir de l’étude du développement croissant des Associations familiales catholiques à l’international entre 1980 et 1995, ce chapitre éclaire les contours et la structuration d’une nébuleuse « pro-vie ». L’analyse fait un pas de côté par rapport à l’historiographie des actions commandos en analysant l’institutionnalisation d’un militantisme et d’une représentation catholique intransigeante à l’échelle européenne et internationale. La perspective adoptée est celle d’une sociologie du catholicisme et, plus particulièrement, d’une sociologie du catholicisme intransigeant et du catholicisme d’identité. L’étude des mobilisations des AFC met en évidence le rôle moteur et central que des catholiques français ont joué dans ce processus d’institutionnalisation du militantisme catholique intransigeant. Grâce à ses ressources conséquentes, et à sa place atypique dans le champ familial français, les AFC ont en effet facilité la mise en relation d’acteurs familiaux et pro-vie internationaux et leur accès aux instances de représentation internationale.

Based on the study of the international growing development of the “Associations familiales catholiques” (AFC) between 1980 and 1995, this chapter sheds light on the contours and structuring of a "pro-life" network. The analysis takes a step aside from the historiography of commando actions by analyzing the institutionalization of activism and representation of an uncompromising Catholicism at a European and international scale. The perspective adopted is that of a sociology of Catholicism and, more particularly, of a sociology of uncompromising Catholicism and Catholic identity. The study of the AFC actions highlights the driving and central role that French Catholics have played in this process of institutionalizing intransigent Catholic activism. Thanks to its substantial resources and its atypical place in the French family field, the AFCs have indeed facilitated the bringing together of international family and pro-life actors and their access to international representation bodies.
