Structure of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over the west coast of India has been investigated using conserved variable analysis (CVA). Daily radiosonde data of Thiruvananthapuram (TVM), Mangalore (MNG) and Mumbai (MUM) at 00 UTC during the monsoon season of 2018 procured from India Meteorological Department have been primarily utilised for the study. The days are categorised as clear sky, partly cloudy and cloudy days based on the OLR data and the profiles of wind, specific humidity, potential temperature, virtual potential temperature, equivalent potential temperature and saturated equivalent potential temperature are elucidated. Distinct variations in the ABL structure have been observed between the three conditions as well as between the three stations. TVM and MNG have double mixing height during all the three conditions, whereas MUM has double mixing height mainly during cloudy days and partly cloudy days. About 60% of the clear sky days of MUM have only one mixing height due to strong convective mixing. Convective mixing is weak over TVM and MNG in all conditions. In TVM and MNG, the first mixing height (above the surface inversion) is observed at lower elevation (< 200 m) during the cloudy days, whereas it is at higher elevation (> 500 m) in MUM. The double mixing height is primarily attributed to the moisture advection from different boundary layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
