The Generic Skills Curriculum is based on studies and surveys conducted from 1972 to 1975 by the Training and Research and Development Station to determine certain generic skills used in some 76 occupations across Canada. Generic skills are defined as those behaviors which are fundamental to the performance of many tasks carried out in a wide range of occupations in the areas of mathematics, communications, reasoning skills, interpersonal skills, and manipulative skills. They do not include knowledge and procedures unique to specific employers and obtainable as part of normal orientation to a new job. The skills curriculum has four distinct courses: reading, writing, listening, and mathematics. The four courses are divided into 53 units or training packages which may be used in individualized student instruction. The content of the courses is at an adult level, grade 5-10. Each booklet is organized into seven parts to facilitate the individualized process: skills records, skills inventory, learning resources, prescription sheet, skills check 1, skills check 2, and answer keys. An instructor's book and a tapescript for the listening course are provided in the package. (MKM)
