On the Relationship between Writing and Reading Processes: A Contextual Perspective.

The relationship between writing and reading processes can be analyzed from several contextual perspectives. The contextual perspectives may be linguistic, social, schematic, or strategic. While the writer follows several steps in getting meaning into print, the reader may not be able to reverse perfectly these steps and get meaning from print. The reading processes are affected by writing processes to the extent that writers' and readers' contexts are not equivalently transparent or obvious to each other. Writers have some control over the transparency or clarity they provide to readers' contexts if they choose to be sensitive to them; however, readers may have less choice. The research implies that any conception of the reading/writing process will have to be sensitive to the particular processing demands on writers versus readers and to the differences in writers' and readers' purposes for writing and reading.
