This practicum concentrated on the need for a social studies critical thinking continuum in the middle school. An oral interview with personnel in one Florida school district's Social Studies Program Development Department revealed that a critical thinking continuum did not exist. A review of the literature on critical thinking indicated that many people in the field supported the inclusion of these skills in the curriculum. The study's goals were: (1) to extend and enrich the methodology of teaching social studies; (2) to expose students to techniques in applying critical thinking skills; and (3) to create a program that would blend with, not eliminate, the social studies curriculum. The study involved: (1) distributing a curriculum analysis survey to 40 middle school social studies teachers; (2) developing appropriate lesson plans that were correlated to the Florida State Department of Education's Uniform Student Performance Standards; (3) meeting with eight middle school principals to gain their support and acceptance of the program; (4) conducting a 10-hour workshop for teachers and department chairpersons; (5) providing procedures, lesson plans, data collection forms, methodologies, and practice in designing instructional strategies; (6) conducting follow-up visitations to observe and provide assistance; (7) supervising and maintaining the program; and (8) developing and administering an evaluation component. The results of the program were positive. An analysis of the program revealed that students with the ability to apply thinking skills do show an improvement in their performance. More than 63 percent of the students met the criteria for success when the scores of a pretest-posttest questionnaire were compared. Teachers, department chairpersons, and principals rated the program as desirable and appropriate and recommended that it be expanded. Charts, figures, tables, and 33 references, along with 12 appendices that contain various questionnaires and survey instruments, are included. (Author/JHP)
