The purpose of the present research study was to examine effects of the use of SmartMusic practice software on the intonation and rhythmic accuracy of brass players' musical performances. Twenty college brass players who served as participants in the four-week study were randomly assigned to one of two practice conditions. The WSM (With SmartMusic) group practiced assigned solo material using SmartMusic Software, while the NSM (No SmartMusic) group did not use the software. Analyses of recordings made by participants during the initial meeting with the researcher indicated no statistically significant differences between the groups in intonation accuracy, rhythmic onset errors, pitch discrimination skill or expert judges' the performances. After the initial fleeting, the participants practiced solo using the assigned practice condition and met weekly with the researcher to make sound recordings of their performances. Participants also completed practice log/journals. At the conclusion of the study, participants using SmartMusic were asked to provide written responses to questions regarding their opinions of the software's usefulness. Results indicated no statistically significant difference (p [greater than or equal to] 0.05) between the groups in intonation accuracy as measured at designated pitch points or in rhythmic note onset errors. Statistically significant differences were found between the groups in expert judges' ratings, with SmartMusic participants showing greater pretest to posttest gain in the areas of Intonation, Tone Quality, Interpretation/Expressive Quality and Overall Ratings. Written comments provided by the SmartMusic participants indicated a unanimously positive reaction to the usefulness of the software. According to the results of the study, SmartMusic seemed to show positive effects in users' performances as assessed in musical context by expert judges.
