In the ever-changing clinical research environment, academic health centers seek leaders who are visionary and innovative. Clinical trials offices across the country are led by individuals who are charged with promoting growth and change in order to maximize performance, develop unique research initiatives, and help institutions achieve a competitive advantage. The main purpose of this study was to identify the clinical trials office leadership practices used in academic health centers. This study used Kouzes and Posner's (2003) Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) to identify the extent to which clinical trials office leaders exhibited each of the following five leadership practices: Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way, and Encouraging the Heart. Ninety-eight clinical trials office leaders completed the LPI survey. Overall, leaders of clinical trials offices scored higher than the LPI norms in all five leadership practice categories. Throughout the statistical analyses, the Enabling Others to Act leadership practice stood out among clinical trials office leaders and had the highest LPI scores overall. The implication is that clinical trials office leaders believe in providing resources and support for their staff. Clinical trials office leaders also recognize the need for professional development and personal growth for each of their staff members. This can positively influence the work environment, help promote staff retention, and groom future clinical trials office leaders.
