This doctoral study explores the preferences for professional development of community college faculty to understand and learn how to use the technology available for online classrooms. To understand and learn how to use the technology available for online classrooms, college faculty must learn how to use Web 2.0 tools properly to instruct students. Faculty members must attend professional development courses to understand how to become more knowledgeable in the online classroom. One of the reasons for doing a study of this nature is to obtain information from the college faculty about Web 2.0 tool preferences in an online classroom. The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify professional development Web 2.0 tools faculty prefer in an online classroom setting. The ability of faculty to transfer their learning into the classroom is vital to the success of the students at this Midwest community college. The theoretical framework included the concepts of transformative learning, self-efficacy, and social learning. Participants for this study included twenty faculty drawn from full-time and part-time and adjunct faculty at a community college in the United States Midwest. Data were analyzed using NVivo software and inductive coding was used to identify themes and patterns to analyze the data collected from the faculty. Data were analyzed and coded based on common themes using reflective thematic analysis. Member checking and triangulation of the data were used to ensure accuracy and credibility. The findings of this study indicated that part-time and full-time faculty prefer professional development of Web 2.0 tools in their field of study. This study contributes to social change by providing what faculty preferences are for Web 2.0 tools in an online classroom to teach emerging technologies proficiently. This knowledge can be utilized by the college directors on how faculty preferences in professional development can help with providing training in the various fields or integrating into the learning management system.
