The ancient period known as the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States, which lasted from the fifth to third centuries BCE, was perhaps the era of greatest intellectual freedom in Chinese history, even though it experienced restless wars and political disorder. During this period, the five major Chinese philosophies—Confucianism, Menciusism, Legalism, Mohism, and Taoism—were formed. This cultural period ended in 221 BCE, when China was unified under a single centralized feudal government by Emperor Shih Huang-ti.
