It has often been said that the most poetic works of eighteenth century France were written in prose—works such as François de Salignac de la Mothe-Fénelon’s (1699; , 1720), Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s (1761; , 1761) and especially (1782; , 1783), Bernardin de Saint-Pierre’s (1787; , 1789), and Constanin Volney’s (1791; the ruins). Here, true poetic feeling and sentiment, as those terms were defined by the Romantics, are indisputably present. However, the eighteenth century, turned toward reason and progress, was not without poetry of a different sort, and critics who view the period as a mere lacuna in poetry between classicism and Romanticism have not studied the major authors or their influence on the following centuries. There was indeed a great output of poetry, although in many cases quantity substituted for quality.
