Summary: Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) was an insurgent group organized with the specific purpose of removing Charles Taylor as president of Liberia. LURD sparked the second Liberian civil war in 2000 with attacks on villages near the border with Guinea, where LURD was first organized in 1999. LURD was mostly comprised of veterans of the first Liberian civil war (1989-1997) who had fought on the losing side for the United Liberation Movement for Democracy (ULIMO). This group represented mostly ethnic Mandingos and Krahns. The latter had been the dominant ethnic group behind the dictator Samuel Doe, whose overthrow had been the objective of Charles Taylor, who initiated the first civil war. Although LURD's military commanders in the second civil war were mostly Mandingo or Krahn, the organization explicitly welcomed members of other ethnic groups, or "tribes.” LURD had no religious or ideological objectives; its sole goal was to overthrow Taylor. After Taylor was forced to resign and leave the country under the terms of the 2004 comprehensive peace agreement, LURD disarmed, as promised, and disbanded at the end of 2004.
