Though consumption had declined over several decades, as of the 2020s, the use, and abuse, of alcohol by adolescents was still widely viewed as an issue of concern in American society. Alcohol has been associated with three of the leading causes of death among adolescents (car crashes, murder, and suicide). Excessive use of alcohol (which is technically illegal until age twenty-one) can also have less drastic and life-altering consequences, such as a drop-off in academic performance or a deterioration of family relationships. Society may contribute to underage alcohol use by linking drinking to sophistication and good times through ubiquitous advertising promoting beer and other alcoholic beverages. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), alcohol is the most commonly abused drug in children and teenagers. Adolescent alcohol use disorder (AUD) is commonly linked or is identified as the causal factor in mental disorders, such as anxiety, depression, or behavioral disorders, in teens.
