Chinese is undoubtedly the most widely spoken non-European language worldwide. In Germany it has gained in popularity in the last decades and been introduced as a school and examination subject into secondary schools. However, the research of second language acquisition in Chinese and the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language (TCFL), especially to European learners, are still in their infancies. Both basic and applied research is needed to investigate important topics that link language acquisition, linguistics, educational science and sinology. From September 5-8, 2018, the "Summer school on empirical research methods in Chinese linguistics and Chinese as a foreign language (CFL)" was held at the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Göttingen, to bridge this gap. It offered a variety of lectures and workshops to young scholars to further their knowledge on theories in second language acquisition and methodological research skills. Six workshops on qualitative and quantitative research methods were conducted by experienced researchers from Germany, the UK and the USA who are working in the area of second language acquisition and Chinese linguistics. In addition, the participants had the opportunity to present and discuss their research with the panel of experts and fellow researchers. The summer school set goals were achieved: to promote empirical research in TCFL, to strengthen the network of CFL researchers in Europe and to lay the foundation for future collaborations among young researchers.
