Weaponry of the Przeworsk Culture in the light of metallographic examinations. The case of the cemetery in Raczkowice.

This paper discusses seven finds of weaponry (one sword and six spearheads) from the Roman Period Przeworsk Culture cremation cemetery in Raczkowice, Częstochowa Distr., PL. This assemblage can generally be dated to Phases B2–C1. All the discussed artefacts went through the funeral pyre and two underwent additional treatment as part of funeral rites: the sword and one of the spearheads were bent. Metallographic examinations demonstrated that all these weapons were forged from single pieces of ferrous metal. However, in some of these the carbon content was high enough to allow for heat-treatment, thus making these artefacts potentially high-quality weapons. Regrettably, the cremation ceremony removed all possible traces of heat-treatment and it may have also caused partial decarburising of metal. On the basis of typological and technological traits it can be supposed that all the discussed weapons were of local Przeworsk Culture provenance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

L'article traite de sept armes (une épée et six fers de lance) provenant d'une nécropole de l'époque romaine associée à la culture de Przeworsk (Raczkowice, District Częstochowa, PL). Cet assemblage peut globalement être daté des phases B2–C1. Tous les objets en question ont subi une crémation sur un bûcher funéraire et deux d'entre eux ont été soumis à des actes supplémentaires faisant partie des rituels funéraires: l'épée et l'un des fers de lance étaient pliés. Des études métallographiques ont montré que chaque arme a été forgée à partir d'une pièce de fer unique. Dans certains cas, la teneur en carbone est suffisamment élevée pour permettre un traitement thermique, ce qui signifie que ces objets pourraient potentiellement être des armes de haute qualité. Cependant, le rite de crémation a causé la disparition de toutes les traces possibles de traitement thermique et a également pu causer une décarburation partielle du métal. En se fondant sur leurs caractéristiques typologiques et technologiques, on peut supposer que toutes les armes discutées ont été produites sur le territoire de la culture de Przeworsk. Vorgestellt werden sieben Waffenfunde (ein Schwert und sechs Lanzenspitzen) aus dem kaiserzeitlichen Brandgräberfeld der Przeworsk-Kultur in Raczkowice, Kr. Częstochowa (Tschenstochau), Polen. Die Funde datieren in die Stufen B2–C1. Alle Objekte waren dem Scheiterhaufenfeuer ausgesetzt, ein Schwert und eine Lanzenspitze wurden im Rahmen der Bestattungsrituale verbogen. Metallografische Untersuchungen zeigten, daß alle besprochenen Waffen aus einem Stück ferritischen Metalls geschmiedet wurden. In einigen dieser Waffen war der Kohlenstoffanteil hoch genug, um diese weiteren Hitzebehandlungen zu unterziehen. Die Artefakte können damit als potenziell hochqualitative Waffen angesprochen werden. Leider sind durch das Brandbestattungsritual und die teilweise Entkohlung im Feuer sämtliche entsprechenden Spuren verloren gegangen. Aufgrund typologischer und technologischer Eigenschaften kann angenommen werden, daß alle der Przeworsk-Kultur zuweisbaren Waffen lokale Erzeugnisse waren. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Artykuł omawia siedem zabytków uzbrojenia (miecz i sześć grotów włóczni) z cmentarzyska ciałopalnego kultury przeworskiej z okresu rzymskiego w Raczkowicach, pow. Częstochowa, PL. Zbiór ten można ogólnie datować na fazy B2–C1. Wszystkie omawiane zabytki przeszły przez stos ciałopalny, a wobec dwóch zastosowano dodatkowe zabiegi będące częścią rytuałów pogrzebowych: miecz i jeden z grotów zostały zgięte. Badania metaloznawcze wykazały, że wszystkie zabytki uzbrojenia wykuto z pojedynczych kawałków metalu żelaznego. W niektórych z nich zawartość węgla była na tyle wysoka, że umożliwiała obróbkę cieplną. Przedmioty te mogły być potencjalnie bronią wysokiej jakości. Obrzęd ciałopalenia doprowadził jednak do usunięcia wszelkich możliwych śladów obróbki cieplnej i mógł także spowodować częściowe odwęglenie metalu. Na podstawie cech typologicznych i technologicznych można przypuścić, iż wszystkie omawiane zabytki uzbrojenia pochodziły z obszaru kultury przeworskiej. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
