The article presents an in-depth discussion of the study of the Jewish Holocaust in the Soviet Union during World War II, particularly focusing on the collected photographic evidence relating to it and the characteristics of Soviet Holocaust historiography in general. Introductory comments are given noting how Holocaust historiography in the Soviet Union was scarce until after the collapse of communism in 1991. Details are given describing several examples from preserved documentation of the atrocities and the experiences of Soviet Jews during the period. Further discussion is also given relating to the developments and trends in 21st century Russian historical inquiry into the subject, focusing on the culture of historical memory devoted to the Holocaust.
