The author discusses preliminary findings of an experiment conducted by officials with the U.S. National Science Foundation's (NSF's) Molecular and Cellular Biosciences (MCB) Division investigating whether the NHS is rejecting research proposals because of potential biases in the grant-review process. Topics include an overview of the experimental design of the study, called The Big Pitch, the flaws in NSF's proposal review process that foster bias, and the value of making proposals anonymous, such as enabling researchers from institutions that are not known for research to have an equal opportunity for receiving grant NSF money.
