The article examines the texts and contexts of the Hollywood 1956 film "Teahouse of the August Moon" as a collaborative project between Japan and he U.S. Topics covered include the production, narrative content and reception of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM)-produced film in the two countries, the goals and actions of diverse agents, such as studios, and the wider influence of the film on both sides of the Pacific. The three larger contributions to the study of America in the world that the study of the film will yield is also discussed.
